Spice N Sugar   Date :28-Sep-2017

Navratri started last week and my friend asked me "How do you celebrate Navratri?". He must be anticipating answer like Garaba or Jallosh (some other celebration).
I said "We do Durga Sapshtati path (दुर्गा सप्तशती पाठ) Or Durga Stuti".
He said "Why?"
That question, triggered series of thoughts in my mind. Basic question is "Why do we worship?"
Let’s try to find out answer with help of Durga Shaptsati story.

Story is about battle between Devas and Asuras. In battle when Demons (Madhu-kaithab, Shumbh-Nishumbh, Mahishasur, Raktbeej and others) became stronger than Devas.
Then Devas invoked Maa Adi-Shakti for help. Goddess came and killed those demons to brought harmony back in nature.
When we praise Maa Adi-Shakti with full devotion, we feel lot of energy, happiness and bliss.

What is significance of this story in modern era?
Demons mentioned in the battle exhibits certain behaviours.
Shubh-Nishumbh : Greed. Wanted to acquire things illegally those they didn't belong.
Mahishasur : He destroyed himself due to Ego.
Madhu-Kaitabh : Didn't handle own Criticism.

Our life is continuous battle between positivity and negativity like Devas and Asuras.
In our day to day life, we come across many situation when demons like greed, anger, ego or fear comes on surface.
When they become stronger, brings destruction in our life. In such situation, we need to call Maa Adi-Shakti for Help.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।

Meaning:
I invoke Devi who is formless and omnipresent (Present in every atom).
I ask Devi to come into my life in form of peace. I am very much grateful for her blessings.

If you call the energy with full devotion, she will come and kill those demons.
Adi Shakti is formless energy. In fact we all are invoking her in every incidence.
When we angry/criticize/hate/blame/make fun of other, we call the energy in form of Demons.
When we happy/grateful/humble/appreciating other, we call the energy in form of Maa Adi-Shakti.

Many people say when I am angry, spontaneously I shouted on other and damaged the relationship, lost control over mind.
Yes that's correct. In such situation, we respond spontaneously. It’s part of our subconscious behaviour.

Subconscious behaviour developed by Conditioning.
When we do anything repeatedly, it becomes our very nature.
If we most of time in anger, frustration, hater or criticism, it becomes our nature.
Regular prayer or worship help us to condition our mind for positivity.
When we conditioned with positivity, our subconscious behaviour automatically handle negative emotions with calmness. And we overcome on negativity.
This is why we should do regular worship/prayer.

Most of our traditions are very valuable, they designed intelligently in such a way that, they guide us to bring harmony in our life.
Hope this will clear some air of superstition in us.
